Tile

Ceramic and porcelain subway from 2 by 4 up to 4 by 16. Handmade zellige with its irregular edges and shifting glaze depth. Glass mosaic on mesh sheets. Natural stone tile. Penny round, hexagon, picket and elongated square formats. Layouts run bond, stacked, herringbone, vertical stack and basketweave, and the layout changes labor cost as much as the tile does.

Full-Height Slab

The counter material continues up the wall to the underside of the upper cabinets, or all the way to the ceiling behind a range. Quartz, granite, quartzite, porcelain and sintered stone all do this well. There is no grout to clean, the veining runs continuously from the horizontal to the vertical, and it is the single most requested upgrade on our new quartz and granite counters in Palm Springs projects.

5. Setting. Thinset, spacers, tile, then trim and edge profiles. Usually one to two days.
6. Grout and seal. The following day, once the thinset cures, then haze cleanup and sealing.
7. Silicone and walkthrough. Flexible sealant at every change of plane, then we look at it together in daylight.

Two to four working days for a tile backsplash. Full-height slab is faster on site, usually a single day, but it needs the same fabrication window any slab needs.

Grout, Cleaning and Living With It

Grout is the maintenance, not the tile. Narrow joints show less soil but demand consistent tile. Wider joints forgive handmade product.
